Paving the way for mobile payments

Mobile payments – a new way to pay

Digital payments are a major part of our innovation. In 2012 we enabled over 750,000 mobile phones to make payments (using PayTag) across three markets and helped increase contactless transactions by over 250% year-on-year in the UK.

In 2009, we teamed up with Orange to offer our combined 28 million customers in the United Kingdom an unprecedented range of mobile payment services. This is now a reality and at the end of May 2011, we launched the UK’s first mobile payment service for consumers.

This entirely new, secure and convenient way to make payments is an evolution of how people pay and follows previous payment milestones such as the move from cheques to plastic. Mobile payments will be accepted at stores nationwide including Pret a Manger, EAT., Little Chef, Wembley Arena, Subway, Wilkinson, Boots and McDonalds where contactless payments are currently accepted.

In 2012, we expanded our contactless offering with the launch of Barclaycard PayTag, a handy little sticker that can turn any mobile phone into a new way to make contactless payments in seconds
